Rarely does the question come up, here at
DQT; of whether someone should coordinate everything they wear with one colour. For instance, a common question asked is whether or not a man should wear an all-black suit (including a black tie) to a funeral. And the question has a very simple answer: it’s all about personal preference.
Some occasions will predominate what colours you’re supposed to wear – Christmas, for example, is a happy holiday with many tacky dressers that coordinate with green and red. We’d recommend that you don’t wear a green and red suit, though. But you get the idea. Funerals, on the other hand, are a more somber occasion where most attendees will where various tones and shades of black. As far as men go, though, you’ve got to wear what everyone else is wearing.
It comes down to this, when thinking about wearing all black, even a black tie: is everyone else going to be wearing black? Looking too formal in a casual situation can really ruin someone’s look, like you’ve just shown up to a causal party wearing a black suit and a black tie. People will get the wrong impression of you, and, quite simply, you may creep others out.
However, in a business meeting situation, or any type of formal work meeting, coordinating everything you wear with black can give you a very nice look. A black suit and
black tie will make you look sharp, thinner, and serious. Depending on what look you’re going for and what you want others to think of you, a black suit and a black tie is either a very good choice or a very poor choice in wardrobe. If you coordinate with whichever occasion you choose, you can’t go wrong – just make sure you don’t wear an all-black suit to a casual party; it’ll be the end of the party.
